Subject: Harmonic Drive with AC Servo Motor

Dear all,

first of all, sorry for my absolute ignorance in electronics..

I am operating a KFLOP/KSTEP combination with my 4-axis CNC and regular stepper motors.

Now I want to add a new rotary axis with a harmonic drive and found a system as shown in the pictures attached. The information available is that its an "AC Servo Actuator" (synchronous servo motor).

Some info on the encoder are provided here:

http://harmonicdrive.de/en/products/servo-products/actuators-with-hollow-shaft/fha-c-mini.html

Can you tell me, if it is possible to hook up such a motor to KFLOP/KSTEP? Or maybe with

Thanks so much already in advance!

Kind regards,

Johannes

Johannes,

You don't connect a harmonic drive with servo direction to the KFLOP/KSTEP, you must have a Harmonic Driver that goes with that Harmonic Servo unit.  Then you connect the KSTEP to the Servo driver.  You also need to ensure that the servo driver supports Step and Direction inputs prior to spending the money or you will need to buy a KANALOG which is how you hook up Servo Amps that use Velocity or other modes to control the motor.

Thanks for the explanation Russ. Ok, just googled a bit and a dedicated driver for the HD can be really expensive.. So I guess this nice and compact unit is unfortunately out of scope..
Thanks again and kind regards,
Johannes

Look on the Harmonic Drive site and you will find the matching driver for those units.

Googled a bit more, maybe there is a chance to use something low-cost to drive the servo, even open-loop would be fine:
and
(DC...)

I might maybe contact the persons involved in these videos..:)
